Samson Sky, the developer behind the Switchblade flying car, has announced a major milestone in its journey to production with the selection of Beyond Motors as its primary electric motor supplier. The announcement comes just months after the Switchblade completed its highly anticipated first flight in November 2023.
The Switchblade features Samson Sky’s proprietary Skybrid™ hybrid-electric system and is designed as a high-performance vehicle on both land and in the air. It boasts a ground speed of over 100 mph and can go from 0 to 60 mph in just over five seconds. In flight mode, the vehicle cruises at 160 mph and offers a flying range of up to 500 miles on a single tank of premium automotive gasoline.e. ”We’re proud to partner with Beyond, their e-motors are a perfect fit for our unique flying car hybrid-electric system,” said Sam Bousfield, CEO Samson Sky and designer of the Switchblade.
A key innovation of the Switchblade is its ability to transition seamlessly between driving and flying. The two-seat, street-legal vehicle can be stored in a residential garage and driven to a nearby airport, where it transforms into a plane in under three minutes by extending its wings and tail. After landing near the destination, it reverts to driving mode for the final stretch of the journey. “With the Switchblade you can fly whenever you want, and we’re looking forward to bringing the freedom of flight to people around the world,” said Bousfield. “There’s nothing like flying above it all – the view out the window is amazing.”
As an Experimental category aircraft under FAA regulations, the Switchblade requires owners to participate in the building process. Each owner will spend one week at the Samson Builder Assist Center to complete 51% of their aircraft. Samson Sky will finish the remaining work before delivery.
The company says this hands-on model offers customers a unique and engaging way to own a personal flying car, combining the performance of a sports car with the freedom of flight.
