In a move set to revolutionize electric mobility in Uttar Pradesh, the state inaugurated its first solar-powered electric vehicle (EV) charging station in Banthra, marking a major milestone in its sustainable transportation roadmap.

The station, launched in the Sarojininagar constituency, was inaugurated by BJP MLA Rajeshwar Singh, who emphasized the strategic importance of building clean energy-based EV infrastructure. “This solar-powered EV charging station is a model for the future. It not only reduces dependency on conventional power sources but also ensures that our transition to electric mobility is truly green,” said Singh.

The initiative aligns with India’s growing focus on expanding EV charging networks that are powered by renewable sources — a critical step in minimizing the lifecycle carbon emissions of electric vehicles. With Uttar Pradesh already home to over 3.75 lakh registered EVs, the demand for accessible and eco-friendly charging points is surging.

The integration of solar energy into EV charging addresses two key challenges: rising urban air pollution and the carbon intensity of India’s power grid. Singh noted that each EV, when powered by clean sources, can offset nearly 1.5 million grams of CO₂ emissions per year. “This is about more than vehicles. It’s about transforming our cities and creating a cleaner, healthier future,” he said.

The newly installed charging station not only supports current EV users but also strengthens public confidence in adopting electric mobility, which remains a key pillar of India’s 2030 climate action goals. With a 30% EV adoption target by 2030, the state’s push for clean-energy charging is expected to significantly contribute to oil import savings — estimated at $60 billion annually at scale.

The launch also complements Uttar Pradesh’s aggressive solar expansion plan — aiming to scale from 288 MW in 2017 to 22,000 MW by 2030. By leveraging solar energy for mobility, the state is reinforcing the synergy between the energy and transport sectors.

The Banthra facility is expected to serve as a prototype for similar stations across the state. Officials hinted at plans to replicate the model in other districts to ensure seamless EV adoption supported by sustainable infrastructure.
