In a major stride toward sustainable urban mobility, the Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel, Shri H.D. Kumaraswamy, chaired a high-level meeting on the rollout of electric buses under the PM e-Drive Scheme. The session focused on implementation strategies for the states of Telangana, Karnataka, Delhi, and Gujarat—signifying a crucial step in realising Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a clean and inclusive transport future for India.

Following extensive deliberations, the Ministry of Heavy Industries announced the allocation of thousands of electric buses to key urban centres. Bengaluru will receive approximately 4,500 e-buses, followed by 2,800 for Delhi, 2,000 for Hyderabad, 1,000 for Ahmedabad, and 600 for Surat, under the current phase of the PM e-Drive initiative.

“Thanks to the leadership of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji, India is now taking bold strides toward sustainable urban mobility,” said Shri Kumaraswamy. “From Bengaluru to Delhi, cities are actively embracing electric buses to make public transport cleaner, smarter, and more efficient.”

Highlighting the scheme’s larger mission, the Minister added, “We are not merely allocating electric buses—we are shaping the future of India’s transport system with innovation and environmental consciousness. With close coordination between the Centre and states like Telangana, Karnataka, Delhi, and Gujarat, we are determined to deliver on the PM e-Drive promise.”

The PM e-Drive Scheme, spearheaded by Prime Minister Modi, is among the world’s largest efforts to electrify public transport. It plans to deploy 14,028 electric buses across the country with a total financial outlay of ₹10,900 crore from April 2024 to March 2026. The Ministry assured all participating states of its commitment to timely delivery, operational readiness, and long-term collaboration.

The move not only reflects India’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions but also aims to provide citizens with modern, efficient, and eco-friendly commuting options across urban India.
