Slate Automotive, backed by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, has officially launched its debut vehicle — the Slate — a bare-bones electric pick-up truck that promises to be the most affordable EV in the U.S. market when it hits streets in late 2026.
Following a guerrilla marketing campaign, Slate Automotive pulled the covers off its entry-level model priced at $US27,500 ($AU43,091), or approximately $US20,000 ($AU31,339) after federal incentives. This positions it as the cheapest electric vehicle available in the U.S., undercutting the current entry-price holder, the Nissan Leaf.
The Slate is a two-door, two-seat pick-up designed to be highly customizable. It can be transformed into an SUV by installing modular add-ons, a concept Slate Automotive describes as a “blank slate” platform. SUV conversion kits will be available, though specific pricing for customization options has not yet been disclosed.
Built and assembled in the U.S. Midwest, the Slate is expected to avoid heavy import tariffs. The company aims to sell 150,000 units annually, following a direct-to-consumer sales model similar to Tesla’s approach. Reservations are now open with a fully refundable deposit of $US50 ($AU78).
Simple, Rugged, and Customizable
True to its minimalist philosophy, the base model skips many modern conveniences like an interior touchscreen, instead offering a universal phone mount. A tablet-based infotainment system is available as an optional extra. Keyless entry comes standard.
Measuring 4435mm long, 1793mm wide, and 1760mm high, the Slate is compact yet practical. Its tray offers 994 liters of cargo space, expanding to 2072mm in length with the tailgate open. A 198-liter “frunk” (front trunk) further adds to its utility.
Powered by a 150kW/264Nm rear-mounted electric motor, the Slate can sprint from 0-97km/h (0-60mph) in around 8 seconds, reaching a top speed of 145km/h. Buyers can choose between a standard 52.7kWh battery offering 241km of range or an extended 84.3kWh battery with a claimed 386km range. Rapid DC charging up to 120kW allows a 20-80% top-up in under 30 minutes.
Despite its budget-friendly nature, Slate Automotive emphasized safety, equipping the vehicle with Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Forward Collision Warning, and up to eight airbags. The company stated it aims for the Slate to achieve top safety ratings.
While no plans have been announced for international sales, the launch of Slate marks a bold move to make electric mobility more accessible to American consumers. The model’s affordability, combined with its rugged modular design, could appeal strongly to both urban drivers and outdoor adventurers.
