Indonesia is on track to meet its ambitious target of selling 100,000 electric vehicles (EVs) by the end of 2025, as the nation sees a sharp rise in EV adoption, fueled by strong policy support and a growing domestic market.

Between January and mid-April 2025 alone, more than 16,000 electric vehicles were sold across the country, according to Rachmat Kaimuddin, Deputy for Basic Infrastructure Coordination at Indonesia’s Coordinating Ministry for Infrastructure and Regional Development.

“That’s why we’re quite optimistic about the target. If we look at the trend, we could potentially reach 100,000 units this year,” Kaimuddin stated during his address at an EV forum held in Jakarta.

Government data highlights a remarkable growth in EV sales since 2021. In 2024, EV sales skyrocketed by 152.9 percent year-on-year, reaching 43,000 units compared to 17,000 in 2023.

Kaimuddin emphasized that Indonesia’s EV boom is not just about numbers, but a pivotal shift towards becoming a global EV production hub. “We have enormous potential… We have the capability and the supply chain,” he affirmed.

The EV push is a crucial part of the government’s broader strategy to boost economic growth, enhance energy independence, and combat urban air pollution. With abundant natural resources like nickel—an essential component in EV batteries—Indonesia is uniquely positioned to lead the EV revolution in Southeast Asia.
