Toyota has officially taken the wraps off its latest electric innovation, the 2025 Toyota bZ7, at the Shanghai Motor Show. This all-new electric sedan is the latest addition to the company’s bZ (Beyond Zero) range and marks a significant move in Toyota’s strategy to expand its EV presence, especially in the competitive Chinese market.

Developed in collaboration with Toyota’s Chinese joint-venture partner GAC, the bZ7 is poised to take on segment heavyweights like the Tesla Model S, BYD Han, and Xiaomi SU7. Notably, the bZ7 is expected to be powered by BYD’s highly regarded ‘Blade’ lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery technology, promising improved safety and longevity.

The bZ7 is a large premium electric sedan with a body length exceeding five metres—making it significantly larger than Toyota’s Camry or Prius. It boasts a luxurious and high-tech interior, featuring large digital displays, leather-appointed seating, and woodgrain dash trims, all designed to appeal to the growing number of Chinese consumers favoring upscale electric sedans.

Visually, the bZ7 carries Toyota’s latest design DNA, with slim, angular headlights, prominent front intakes, and a high-set rear tail-light. It also borrows cues from the newest Toyota Prius, such as the full-width front light bar.

While China remains the primary market for the bZ7’s launch later this year, global expansion plans remain unconfirmed. At present, the Toyota bZ4X remains the only bZ model available internationally, including in markets like Australia.

Toyota’s push for electrification in China underscores the automaker’s intent to challenge the dominance of domestic electric giants. With a focus on luxury, cutting-edge tech, and strategic partnerships, the bZ7 is set to become a key player in the high-stakes EV race on Chinese roads.
