India’s electric vehicle (EV) market is witnessing a shift, with Tata Motors experiencing a significant drop in sales, while newer players like MG Motor India and Mahindra make notable gains. The country’s largest automaker, Tata Motors, still leads the market but has seen its dominance slip, especially in March 2025, where its sales dropped by nearly 40% year-on-year.

In March 2025, Tata Motors sold 4,710 electric vehicles, a dramatic drop from 7,184 units in March 2024, marking a 39.72% decline. As a result, Tata’s market share has fallen to 38.10% from a commanding 73.37% the previous year. Despite its extensive EV portfolio, including the Nexon EV, Tiago EV, and Tigor EV, Tata’s decline reflects increasing competition in the fast-growing sector.

JSW MG Motor India, benefiting from Tata’s sales slump, has seen its market share jump to 31.47% from just 11.97% a year earlier. The company’s MG Windsor EV has been a key factor in this surge, with sales growing by an astonishing 231.82% in March 2025, to 3,889 units compared to just 1,172 units in March 2024.

Mahindra, which holds the third spot in the market, recorded a 180.92% YoY growth, selling 1,944 units and capturing 15.73% of the market. The company’s XUV400 EV and other offerings continue to gain traction among Indian consumers.

In contrast, Hyundai made an impressive entry into India’s EV space, with its newly launched Creta Electric helping it claim 6.87% of the market in March 2025, marking a 454.9% increase over the previous year. The company sold 849 units in March, a significant leap from 153 units sold in March 2024.

The overall EV sales in India for March 2025 totaled 12,356 units, reflecting a 26.18% YoY growth, and 1,07,645 units for the fiscal year, achieving a 17.63% YoY growth.

While Tata Motors remains a major player in the market, the rise of MG, Mahindra, and Hyundai signals a dynamic shift in India’s evolving electric vehicle landscape, with new entrants rapidly gaining ground.
