Stellantis N.V. has introduced STLA AutoDrive 1.0, the company’s first in-house-developed automated driving system, offering Hands-Free and Eyes-Off (SAE Level 3) functionality. STLA AutoDrive is a crucial component of Stellantis’ technology strategy, alongside STLA Brain and STLA Smart Cockpit, aimed at advancing vehicle intelligence, automation, and enhancing the user experience.
Designed to enable automated driving at speeds up to 60 km/h (37 mph), STLA AutoDrive reduces driver workload in stop-and-go traffic, allowing drivers to regain valuable time. Perfect for commuters in busy urban environments, the system lets drivers temporarily engage in non-driving activities like watching movies, catching up on emails, reading, or simply enjoying the view.
“Helping drivers make the best use of their time is a priority,” said Ned Curic, Stellantis Chief Engineering and Technology Officer. “By handling routine driving tasks, STLA AutoDrive will enhance the driving experience, making time behind the wheel more efficient and enjoyable.”
The STLA AutoDrive system is designed for simplicity: when traffic and environmental conditions are suitable, drivers are notified that the system is available. Once activated with a physical button, the system takes over, managing speed, steering, braking, and maintaining safe distances based on traffic flow.
STLA AutoDrive uses an advanced suite of sensors to monitor its surroundings continuously, ensuring high-precision awareness and reliable performance even in low-light conditions or challenging weather, such as light rain or road spray. To maintain optimal functionality, an automated sensor-cleaning system ensures that critical components stay clear for consistent reliability.
Engineered for quick, natural responses, STLA AutoDrive is designed to feel smooth, predictable, and human-like in real-world driving scenarios. Whether maintaining safe following distances or adapting to merging traffic, the system provides a confident and stress-free driving experience.
At higher speeds, STLA AutoDrive offers Adaptive Cruise Control and lane centering features in Level 2 (hands-on) and Level 2+ (hands-off, eyes-on) modes.
Built on scalable architecture, STLA AutoDrive is ready for deployment across Stellantis-branded vehicles globally, ensuring a seamless rollout aligned with commercial strategies and market demand. The system is also cloud-connected, enabling over-the-air updates and real-time data integration for continuous optimization.
STLA AutoDrive complies with applicable regulations in supported markets and requires drivers to remain seated, buckled, and ready to take control when needed. It also adheres to regional laws on driver behavior, including restrictions on phone use.
Designed as an evolving platform, STLA AutoDrive may see future advancements, potentially enabling:
- Hands-Free and Eyes-Off operation at higher speeds, up to 95 km/h (59 mph).
- Enhanced off-road automation for select vehicle models.
