Volvo Cars is on the verge of launching its latest fully electric model, the ES90, a groundbreaking vehicle that further cements the company’s commitment to software-defined automotive innovation. Built on the cutting-edge SPA2 architecture and powered by the Volvo Cars Superset tech stack, the ES90 is engineered to continuously evolve, improving safety, performance, and connectivity through advanced core computing and data integration.

Next-Level Computing Power with NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Orin

The ES90 marks a milestone in Volvo’s technological evolution as the first vehicle to feature a dual NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Orin configuration. With a computational capacity of 508 trillion operations per second (TOPS), the ES90 boasts an eightfold increase in AI computing power compared to its predecessor, the DRIVE AGX Xavier. This allows Volvo to expand its deep learning models from 40 million to 200 million parameters, gradually refining the vehicle’s capabilities through software updates and real-world data collection.

“The Volvo ES90 is one of the most technically advanced cars on the market today and is designed to be improved further with time,” said Anders Bell, Chief Engineering and Technology Officer at Volvo Cars. “Built on our state-of-the-art Superset tech stack, the ES90 puts safety at the forefront.”

A Car That Improves Over Time

The ES90’s software-driven approach ensures that it continues to evolve long after leaving the factory. Over-the-air (OTA) updates will deliver new features, improved connectivity, enhanced safety functions, and performance optimizations, including better battery efficiency tailored to individual driving behaviors.

By leveraging the Superset tech stack, Volvo can upgrade all models built on this platform simultaneously, ensuring that innovations made for the ES90 benefit EX90 customers and vice versa. This shift underscores Volvo’s transition from hardware-driven advancements to software-led innovation.

Safe Space Technology: Redefining Automotive Safety

Equipped with a state-of-the-art sensor array—including one lidar, five radars, seven cameras, and twelve ultrasonic sensors—the ES90 offers an unparalleled understanding of its surroundings. This is complemented by an advanced driver understanding system inside the vehicle, designed to detect potential obstacles even in low visibility and proactively activate safety measures such as collision avoidance.

This holistic approach, dubbed Safe Space Technology, underscores Volvo’s mission to create the safest possible driving experience. By integrating AI-powered predictive safety measures, the ES90 ensures that both drivers and passengers are safeguarded against potential hazards on the road.
