The Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team has partnered with Chestnut Carbon, a nature-based carbon developer, to support high-quality carbon removal projects across the Southeastern United States. Our collaboration with Chestnut Carbon will help drive impactful climate initiatives, focusing on the restoration of damaged land. The first project involves converting 200 hectares of degraded agricultural land into thriving, biodiverse forests by planting over 260,000 native trees.

While emissions reduction remains our core priority, we acknowledge that certain areas within our carbon footprint may have residual emissions that require the highest-quality removals, in line with the Oxford Offsetting Principles.

By investing in Chestnut Carbon now, we are securing nature-based carbon removal credits to offset future residual emissions, as well as helping to foster the growth of this vital sector. Our forward purchase of credits, set to be delivered between 2027 and 2030, amounts to 5,500 tonnes of CO₂. Although this represents a small portion of our total footprint, it is an important step toward our goal of achieving Race Team Control Net Zero by 2030.

Chestnut Carbon’s projects target land previously used for monocrops and methane-heavy cattle farming. To date, Chestnut Carbon has planted over 10 million trees, including a diverse mix of native pine and 18 hardwood species, which will capture and remove over one million tonnes of carbon by 2040.

Beyond restoring degraded agricultural lands into healthy forests, these projects also improve regional air quality, water systems, and biodiversity. Additionally, they create economic opportunities for rural communities by sourcing seedlings locally, employing resident experts, and hiring local workers for planting efforts.

This initiative is the latest addition to our portfolio of nature- and technology-based carbon removal projects. By working with Chestnut Carbon, we are investing in a project that is registered with the Gold Standard for Global Goals, ensuring the use of one of the most rigorous forest carbon methodologies, with precise carbon accounting, third-party auditing, and strong evidence of additionality.

“We are determined to lead by example in the pursuit of sustainability. We’re excited about the growth of our sport in the United States and committed to supporting projects there as we work towards our goals. This collaboration is an important step in our strategy to address residual emissions in our carbon footprint. It underscores our commitment to become one of the most sustainable global sports teams.” said Toto Wolff, Team Principal and CEO, Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team.
