In a pivotal announcement at the company’s works meeting in Wolfsburg, Volkswagen CEO Thomas Schäfer outlined an ambitious roadmap for the brand’s future, highlighting the introduction of a new entry-level electric vehicle priced at approximately €20,000. Employees also got a first look at the model’s design, reinforcing the automaker’s commitment to making electric mobility accessible to a broader audience.

“With the results of the negotiations in December, we have embarked on the largest future plan in the history of Volkswagen. We are now following an ambitious course with a view to ensuring that we reach the targets we have jointly agreed. This will be a key step in making electro-mobility attractive for everyone – the clear goal of our brand,” said Schäfer.

Volkswagen plans to showcase the concept model to the public in early March, with the production version set for a 2027 launch. The vehicle will be part of a new small electric car family under the Brand Group Core, complementing the ID.2all, which is slated to hit dealerships in 2026 at a base price below €25,000.

Wolfsburg to Remain the Center of Innovation

During the meeting, Schäfer reaffirmed Volkswagen’s commitment to Wolfsburg as the heart of its innovation and production strategy. The relocation of the Golf to Mexico will create space for advanced manufacturing technologies. Hall 54 will undergo modernization to accommodate new production procedures, allowing Wolfsburg to manufacture the next-generation electric Golf and the electric T-Roc on the upcoming Scalable Systems Platform (SSP).

“The Wolfsburg plant has a clear perspective for the future,” Schäfer stated. “The agreed relocation of the Golf to Mexico will free up space for advanced technologies. In Hall 54, new production procedures will be introduced. We intend to produce the electric Golf successor on the new SSP platform there, as well as the high-volume electric T-Roc. This way, we will be making Wolfsburg the capital of our new all-electric compact class.”

Daniela Cavallo, Chairperson of the General and Group Works Council of Volkswagen AG, emphasized the strategic importance of Wolfsburg, citing the SSP platform as a game-changer for the company’s long-term success. “The future electric flagships – the Golf and the T-Roc produced in Wolfsburg – currently represent a volume in excess of 500,000 units per year,” Cavallo noted. “It will now be crucial to work consistently on the preparations required for success in the years to come.”

Volkswagen’s “Triple A” Strategy: Accelerate, Attack, Achieve

The Volkswagen brand has adopted a three-stage strategic approach to ensure its leadership in the evolving automotive landscape:

  • Catch Up: Strengthening competitiveness by optimizing cost structures and expanding the model lineup strategically.
  • Attack: Introducing nine new models by 2027, including the ID.2all and the €20,000 entry-level EV.
  • Lead: Establishing Volkswagen as the leading technological brand in the volume segment, setting new benchmarks in global mobility.

Since the launch of the ID. product family in 2019, Volkswagen has sold over 1.35 million electric vehicles worldwide, with the ID.3 alone contributing 500,000 units. The company remains focused on further solidifying its position as a leader in the all-electric vehicle market.

With these ambitious plans, Volkswagen is poised to redefine the future of electric mobility, making sustainable transportation more accessible and affordable for consumers across Europe and beyond.
