TDB Supports Development of Retrofit Electric Kits to Accelerate India’s EV Transition

The Technology Development Board (TDB) under the Department of Science & Technology has extended financial backing to M/s Electromotion E-Vidyut Vehicles Pvt. Ltd., a Raipur-based start-up, to develop and commercialize “RetroKit™: Electric Retrofitment Kits for Combustion Engine Vehicles.” This innovation aims to address the high costs of transitioning India’s combustion engine vehicle fleet to electric, in line with the country’s sustainable mobility goals.

A Start-Up Rooted in Innovation

Electromotion E-Vidyut, incubated in Raipur following its emergence from the Smart India Hackathon 2017, specializes in automotive technologies with a focus on electric vehicle (EV) advancements. Its flagship product, RetroKit™, is designed to convert Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) autorickshaws into electric vehicles. The kit has successfully cleared stringent tests conducted by the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.

Key Features and Benefits of RetroKit™

  1. Economic Impact: Drivers can increase daily income by up to 51%, owing to reduced maintenance costs and the elimination of fuel expenses.
  2. Environmental Gains: Each kit conversion reduces annual CO2 emissions by approximately 3,000 kg, equivalent to planting 21 trees.
  3. Broad Compatibility: Designed for 3-wheeler autorickshaws older than five years, the kit is adaptable to multiple makes and models.
  4. Performance Excellence: With a top speed of 50 km/h and high-gradeability, the kit ensures optimal operation, even under heavy loads.

Sh. Rajesh Kumar Pathak, Secretary of TDB, emphasized the alignment of this innovation with India’s sustainable development mission, stating, “RetroKit™ by Electromotion E-Vidyut is a revolutionary solution that addresses India’s critical mobility challenges. This project underscores Atmanirbhar Bharat and Antyodaya, empowering underserved communities through indigenous technology.”

A company representative highlighted the success of over 10,000 kilometers of on-road testing, noting the project’s potential to make electric mobility affordable and accessible for millions in urban and rural India.
