The Government of India has made significant strides in promoting electric mobility through the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of (Hybrid &) Electric Vehicles in India (FAME-India) Scheme. Initially launched in 2015, the scheme aimed to incentivize the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) in the country. After the successful implementation of its first phase, the government launched the second phase, FAME-II, in 2019. With an allocated budget of ₹11,500 Crore, FAME-II focuses on providing financial incentives for a wide range of electric vehicles, including two-wheelers, three-wheelers, four-wheelers, electric buses, and EV public charging stations (PCS).

As of October 31, 2024, a total of ₹8,844 crore has been spent under the scheme. Out of this, ₹6,577 crore was allocated for subsidies, ₹2,244 crore for capital assets, and ₹23 crore for other expenses. The initiative has successfully incentivized the adoption of 16.15 lakh electric vehicles, including 14.27 lakh electric two-wheelers (e-2Ws), 1.59 lakh electric three-wheelers (e-3Ws), 22,548 electric four-wheelers (e-4Ws), and 5,131 electric buses (e-buses). In addition, the scheme has sanctioned 10,985 electric vehicle public charging stations, with 8,812 of these stations already allocated for installation.

FAME-II also includes a phased manufacturing program that encourages the domestic production of electric vehicles and related infrastructure. The scheme has played a crucial role in supporting various policy initiatives, including the reduction of Goods and Services Tax (GST) on electric vehicles and enabling the development of state-specific EV policies. Through these efforts, the government aims to accelerate India’s transition to sustainable mobility by providing affordable and environment-friendly transportation options for the masses.
