BYD, a global leader in electric vehicles (EVs), has taken another step towards strengthening its footprint in India by filing a patent for its luxury electric SUV, the Denza N9. This development comes as the Chinese automaker focuses on expanding its passenger vehicle portfolio in the Indian market, following its initial presence in the commercial vehicle segment.
The Denza N9, unveiled at the Guangzhou Auto Show in November, serves as the flagship model for BYD’s premium sub-brand, Denza. The SUV is offered in both all-electric and plug-in hybrid configurations, showcasing the brand’s technological prowess.
Design and Features
The Denza N9 features a striking design, with a sealed-off nose, sleek triple LED projector headlamps, and a bold bumper with black inserts. The SUV’s side profile is understated, accentuated by flared wheel arches housing 21-inch or 22-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels. At the rear, a connected LED light strip spans the tailgate, giving the vehicle a contemporary look.
Inside, the Denza N9 boasts a minimalist cabin with light-colored interiors for the China-spec model. It offers a 2+2+2 seating configuration and an array of advanced features, including:
- A 50-inch heads-up display (HUD)
- A 17.3-inch central touchscreen infotainment system
- A 13.2-inch driver’s instrument panel
- A 13.2-inch touchscreen for front passengers
- A standout 17.1-inch ceiling-mounted rear entertainment screen
Powertrain Options
The plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant of the Denza N9 pairs a 2.0-liter gasoline engine (producing 205 PS) with a 47 kWh battery, offering an electric-only range of up to 165 km. With two electric motors, the PHEV delivers a combined system output of 911 bhp and reaches a top speed of 230 kmph.
The all-electric version features a larger battery and a triple-motor setup, generating an impressive 952 bhp.
India Launch Prospects
While a patent application does not confirm a market launch, it signals BYD’s intent to explore opportunities in India. If introduced, the Denza N9 is likely to be available as a fully-electric model and sold as a Completely Built Unit (CBU). Given its premium positioning, the SUV could target the high-end EV segment.
The Denza N9 is expected to debut in China in 2025, with an estimated starting price of CNY 0.5 million (approximately ₹59 lakh). BYD’s move aligns with its broader strategy to leverage its in-house battery technology and establish a significant presence in India’s growing EV market.
