LG Energy Solution (KRX: 373220) has announced a landmark partnership with General Motors (GM) to jointly develop prismatic battery cell technology, building on their robust 14-year collaboration in advanced battery systems. This innovative development is set to power GM’s future electric vehicles (EVs) and further accelerate the global EV revolution.

This agreement positions LG Energy Solution as the first global battery manufacturer to offer all three major battery form factors—pouch-type, cylindrical, and prismatic. The collaboration also highlights the success of their Ultium Cells joint venture, which has created thousands of advanced technology jobs through U.S.-based plants in Ohio and Tennessee.

Prismatic cells, known for their space-efficient rectangular shape, promise enhanced packaging within battery modules and packs. Leveraging its expertise in prismatic cell production, extensive patent portfolio, and advanced stacking technology, LG Energy Solution aims to provide a cutting-edge prismatic solution tailored to diverse EV segment needs.

“LG Energy Solution is proud to be expanding its relationship with one of its strongest partners, GM. Together, we’ve made tremendous progress and look forward to deepening our collaboration to drive the right chemistry and battery combinations for the EV market,” said Wonjoon Suh, Executive Vice President of LG Energy Solution’s Advanced Automotive Battery division.
