Tata Motors, India’s largest commercial vehicle manufacturer, has secured an additional order for 148 electric buses from the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC). The vehicles will be supplied, operated, and maintained by TML Smart City Mobility Solutions Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Tata Motors, under a 12-year contract.
This follows an earlier order of 921 electric buses, most of which have already been delivered and are successfully operating with an uptime exceeding 95%.
The Tata Starbus EV, a 12-metre low-floor electric bus, is designed to provide a sustainable and comfortable commuting experience. With its advanced battery systems and next-generation architecture, the zero-emission buses aim to redefine intra-city travel in Bengaluru.
Commenting on the development, Shri Ramachandran R., IAS, Managing Director of BMTC, stated, “We are happy to further strengthen our partnership with Tata Motors with these additional 148 electric buses for our fleet modernisation. The performance of the existing Tata electric buses has been exceptional, aligning perfectly with our commitment to sustainable and efficient public transportation. The larger e-bus fleet will significantly enhance our capacity to provide eco-friendly, comfortable, and reliable services to the citizens of Bengaluru.”
Echoing this sentiment, Mr. Asim Kumar Mukhopadhyay, CEO and Managing Director of TML Smart City Mobility Solutions Limited, remarked, “We are honoured by BMTC’s continued trust in our e-mobility solutions. This additional order of 148 buses is a testament to the proven success of our Starbus EVs and the operational excellence delivered in Bengaluru’s urban environment. We remain committed to delivering innovative solutions that benefit both the community and the environment.”
Tata Motors’ e-buses in Bengaluru have collectively clocked over 2.5 crore kilometres, resulting in a significant reduction of approximately 14,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions. This milestone underscores the company’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and transforming urban mobility through eco-friendly solutions.
The expanded fleet of Tata Starbus EVs promises to further elevate BMTC’s service delivery, making public transportation in Bengaluru greener and more reliable.
