SWITCH Mobility Unveils India’s First Low-Floor Electric Bus EiV12, Flags Off SWITCH E1 for Europe

In a groundbreaking step toward sustainable urban mobility, SWITCH Mobility Ltd, a subsidiary of Ashok Leyland and part of the Hinduja Group, unveiled India’s first low-floor electric city bus, SWITCH EiV12. Launched by Shri Nitin Gadkari, Hon’ble Minister for Road Transport and Highways of India, the event marked a significant milestone in India’s electric vehicle revolution.

Designed for urban transport, the SWITCH EiV12 features India’s first chassis-mounted batteries with a scalable battery capacity exceeding 400+ kWh. This purpose-built platform combines cutting-edge technology, passenger safety, and accessibility while aligning with the government’s Make in India initiative.

On the occasion, the SWITCH E1, designed specifically for the European market, was also flagged off virtually, showcasing the company’s global design philosophy and advanced EV architecture.

Commitment to Sustainability and Innovation

Speaking at the event, Mr. Ashok P. Hinduja, Chairman of the Hinduja Group of Companies (India), stated: “These buses are a tribute to the PM’s Make in India vision: made in India, for India and the World. SWITCH Mobility is inspired to launch vehicles with cutting-edge technology and zero carbon emissions because of the wonderful road infrastructure envisioned by leaders like Modi Ji and implemented by Gadkari Ji.”

Mr. Dheeraj Hinduja, Chairman of SWITCH Mobility, highlighted the strategic milestone: “The launch of the SWITCH EiV12 and SWITCH E1 for Spain reflects our commitment to democratizing electric mobility worldwide and advancing a greener future.”

SWITCH EiV12: Redefining Urban Transport

The SWITCH EiV12 sets a new standard in comfort, accessibility, and safety for city commuters. With seating for up to 39 passengers, its low-floor design includes a kneeling mechanism, an automated wheelchair ramp, and designated spaces for differently-abled passengers. Special safety features include:

  • 5 CCTV cameras for women’s safety with no blind spots
  • 5 dedicated seats reserved for women
  • A panoramic glass area for improved visibility and naturally lit interiors

Powered by SWITCH iON, a proprietary telematics system, the EiV12 offers real-time vehicle health monitoring, fleet management, and rapid recharging through a rear-end dual-gun charging interface. Designed to endure harsh conditions, its IP67-rated battery ensures smooth operation even on flooded roads.

SWITCH E1: European Innovation

The SWITCH E1, engineered for the European market, features:

  • Lightweight monocoque construction for optimal efficiency
  • In-wheel motors and a flat gangway layout for seamless passenger movement
  • Triple-door configuration (front, center, rear) for quick boarding and alighting

Accommodating up to 93 passengers (including standees), the SWITCH E1 delivers sustainable, passenger-centric transportation for European urban transit systems.

Market Outlook

The Indian electric city bus market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 21% by 2030, with EV penetration reaching 70%. The total fleet of electric buses is expected to surpass 70,000 units by the end of the decade, positioning SWITCH Mobility as a key player in the evolving EV landscape.
