Audi’s latest lighting innovation brings a unique touch to its design with the introduction of illuminated rear rings on the A6 e-tron, marking the first time the brand’s iconic logo shines on the rear of a production vehicle. The groundbreaking development, combining aesthetics with functionality, emerged from a close collaboration between Audi’s lighting designers and technical developers, despite the challenges of legal compliance and design precision.

“The illuminated rings represent our brand identity and needed to look exceptional both day and night,” said Christoph Häußinger, Audi’s lighting designer. Achieving the perfect balance between the logo’s day appearance and its striking red illumination at night was a key challenge. According to Stefan Staudacher, head of rear lighting development, creating the ideal red shade that could shine through white paint took meticulous effort and significant technical expertise.

Legal hurdles also played a significant role in the process. “Illuminated logos were a novelty for the European market, and we had to work flexibly alongside evolving regulations,” Staudacher noted.

The collaboration didn’t stop at the standard rings. A black styling package was introduced late in the development phase, incorporating darkened front and rear rings while maintaining the high-quality and sporty aesthetic Audi is known for.

This innovation aligns with Audi’s broader vision of integrating lighting technology into its digitalization and safety strategies. Features such as customizable digital light signatures and second-generation digital rear lights enhance both personalization and road safety. “Our lights not only allow individualization but also enable communication with other road users, enhancing safety,” Staudacher explained.

For Audi, this innovation symbolizes a step forward in blending design, technology, and safety. Häußinger summed it up: “Bringing technical components like lights to life in an emotionally impactful way is what excites us most. The illuminated rings are a testament to what teamwork and innovation can achieve.”

Audi customers can look forward to this stunning new feature on the A6 e-tron, setting a benchmark for style and safety in the electric vehicle segment.
