For the first time in its 57-year history, Mercedes-AMG is developing an SUV entirely in-house. This innovative off-roader, “Born in Affalterbach,” is being built on AMG’s proprietary AMG.EA electric high-performance platform, with prototype test drives scheduled to begin this winter.

High-performance SUVs have been central to AMG’s portfolio since the launch of the pioneering ML 55 AMG over 25 years ago. This groundbreaking model established the high-performance SUV segment, which has grown steadily ever since. Today, Mercedes-AMG offers six SUV model lines, including the GLA, GLB, GLC, GLE, GLS, and EQE SUV, along with the iconic Mercedes-AMG G 63, a hallmark of performance-driven off-road vehicles.

This new SUV project marks a significant milestone, as AMG is developing the entire vehicle architecture independently for the first time. The full-size SUV will be the second model built on the all-electric AMG.EA platform, following the first model currently undergoing testing. It will join AMG’s distinguished lineup of in-house developed vehicles, which includes the GT, SL, SLS, and earlier GT models, further cementing Affalterbach’s legacy of high-performance engineering. “SUVs have been among our most popular models for many years. With the ‘Born in Affalterbach’ SUV, we are responding to this trend by offering our customers a truly captivating high-performance off-roader based on the AMG.EA platform. Our new high-performance architecture follows a clear philosophy: ‘AMG First, EV Second’. This means that the vehicles not only excel as electric vehicles but also embody the core AMG qualities of emotion and performance.”
Michael Schiebe, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes‑AMG GmbH and Head of the Mercedes‑Benz G‑Class & Mercedes‑Maybach divisions
