In a landmark move towards sustainable urban mobility in Latin America, Gogoro Inc., a pioneer in battery-swapping ecosystems, has teamed up with Copec, a leading Latin American energy company, to launch the region’s first two-wheel battery swapping platform and Smartscooters in Santiago, Chile.

The initiative brings Gogoro’s renowned battery-swapping technology to Santiago’s urban landscape, marking the expansion of the company’s ecosystem in Latin America following a similar deployment with Terpel in Bogota, Colombia. Henry Chiang, Interim CEO of Gogoro, highlighted the unique convenience of Gogoro’s battery-swapping model, stating, “Gogoro battery swapping offers a new approach to electric two-wheel refueling that doesn’t require dedicated parking or waiting for a vehicle to charge. We are proud of our partnership with Copec and applaud its mission to offer sustainable transportation alternatives in Latin America.”

Copec Voltex, Copec’s electric mobility division, is overseeing the launch of Gogoro’s network in Santiago, deploying battery-swapping stations at Copec service stations across the city. Currently, stations are available in key boroughs such as La Reina, Ñuñoa, Santiago, La Florida, Huechuraba, Vitacura, Lo Barnechea, and Estación Central, enabling quick and convenient access for riders.

Andrea Castro, CEO of Copec Voltex, expressed the company’s vision for leading energy transition initiatives: “Implementing this ecosystem aligns with our goal to lead the energy transition toward carbon neutrality, which includes transitioning to electric and hybrid vehicles over the next decade. Our partnership with Gogoro lets us offer an innovative charging solution that redefines city travel, lowering barriers to entry and bringing electric mobility to a new group of Chileans.”

Gogoro’s battery-swapping ecosystem operates on a subscription model, providing flexible and affordable options tailored to individual and business riders alike. In Taiwan, Gogoro’s ecosystem currently supports nearly 650,000 riders with over 1.3 million smart batteries in circulation, averaging 400,000 daily swaps across 12,500 stations. The technology has significantly contributed to carbon reduction efforts, with an estimated one billion kilograms of CO₂ saved since its launch in 2015.

With the Santiago rollout, Gogoro and Copec Voltex aim to transform urban mobility in Chile, making sustainable and efficient transportation more accessible to the city’s residents.
