BMW Group Plant Leipzig has commenced production of the second-generation BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé, preparing for its official market debut in March 2025. Joining the BMW 1 Series, BMW 2 Series Active Tourer, and MINI Countryman, the new 2 Series Gran Coupé showcases the plant’s versatile production capabilities, which include assembling four models across two brands on a single line. With production capacity bolstered by recent expansions, Leipzig now outputs up to 1,300 vehicles daily.

First introduced in 2019, the 2 Series Gran Coupé has earned recognition as a sophisticated alternative to the sedan, particularly popular in the UK, China, and the United States. The latest model boasts a refined design with a sporty, elongated silhouette, and an optional illuminated kidney grille. Enhanced by 25 millimeters in height and 20 millimeters in length, it offers increased cabin space and comfort.

A high-tech tailgate assembly process, featuring laser welding, was implemented exclusively for the new 2 Series. Inside, a redesigned, leather-free interior incorporates BMW’s Curved Display, adding a premium touch to the model’s updated aesthetic. The 2 Series’ top-tier version, the BMW M235 xDrive Gran Coupé, is powered by a 300-hp four-cylinder engine. At launch, the vehicle’s engine options will include additional petrol and diesel variants, catering to diverse consumer needs.

High Demand Spurs Plant Expansion

BMW Plant Leipzig, one of the company’s most advanced facilities, has significantly increased its output following a large-scale extension project that began in 2018. Now capable of producing up to 350,000 vehicles per year, the plant introduced night shifts in September, a move that enables round-the-clock operations and marks a first for the facility since its opening in 2005. According to Plant Director Petra Peterhansel, demand for the plant’s models, including the electric MINI Countryman, has secured hundreds of new jobs, generating approximately 900 positions in vehicle production alone.

With the new 2 Series Gran Coupé launch, BMW Group Plant Leipzig has set a benchmark for automotive production flexibility and capacity, demonstrating the facility’s pivotal role in BMW’s global production network.
