In a groundbreaking move to advance road safety, Toyota Motor Corporation and Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT) have announced a joint initiative to develop a comprehensive “Mobility AI Platform.” This collaboration aims to integrate mobility, AI, and telecommunications to create a zero-accident society by leveraging advanced infrastructure and automated driving technologies.
Building on shared values of social contribution and safety-focused innovation, Toyota and NTT envision a society where people, vehicles, and infrastructure are seamlessly connected to prevent traffic accidents. The initiative, which will see a projected investment of 500 billion yen by 2030, targets three key areas of infrastructure: distributed computing, intelligent communications, and AI learning systems.
Central to the partnership is the development of Toyota’s Software Defined Vehicles (SDVs), a technology platform designed to enable continuous, data-driven safety improvements. The companies will jointly build an AI platform that employs a “three-pronged infrastructure approach” to detect and prevent collisions at challenging locations, such as blind intersections. The platform will also support next-generation automated driving systems that evolve based on real-world driving data.
Key elements of the Mobility AI Platform include a distributed computing network, designed to process extensive data at high speeds, particularly in renewable energy-rich regions, promoting both efficiency and sustainability. An intelligent communication infrastructure will provide low-latency, high-reliability communication tailored to urban and rural settings. Finally, an AI infrastructure will support data analysis and learning, creating a mobility system capable of adapting to diverse traffic conditions.
The platform, slated for early development in 2025 and widespread adoption from 2030, is expected to set new standards in the mobility industry and serve as a model for industry-wide collaboration. Through the Mobility AI Platform, Toyota and NTT aim to make zero-accident mobility a reality, reinforcing Japan’s leadership in safe, sustainable, and technologically advanced transportation solutions.
