Automatic transmission technology in the automotive industry is rapidly evolving, focusing on enhanced driving comfort, fuel efficiency, and overall performance. In India, the growing demand for vehicles equipped with automatic transmissions is driven by changing consumer preferences and technological advancements. According to GlobalData, a leading data and analytics firm, the automatic transmission market in India is projected to grow steadily, reaching 709,800 units by 2029, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 1.3% from 2024 to 2029.
GlobalData’s latest report, “Sector Innovation Report: Transmission and Clutch Technologies – Q3 2024,” indicates that approximately 665,500 automotive units are expected to be produced in India in 2024, reflecting consistent growth from previous years. Several automotive companies in India have recently filed patents for innovative automatic transmission technologies, demonstrating their commitment to advancing this sector. Notable patents awarded in India include an adaptive shift control system for automatic transmissions, a dual-clutch transmission with an integrated electric motor, and a predictive gear shift control system for continuously variable transmissions (CVT).
The adaptive shift control system patent utilizes artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms to optimize gear shifts based on driving conditions and driver behavior, providing a seamless and responsive driving experience that enhances comfort and efficiency. Gorantala Sravan Kumar, Associate Project Manager – Automotive at GlobalData, comments: “One of the key drivers of innovation in automatic transmission technology in India is the increasing traffic congestion in urban areas. With more vehicles on the road and longer commute times, automatic transmission systems offer a convenient and stress-free driving experience, especially in stop-and-go traffic conditions. Additionally, the rising awareness of environmental sustainability has led automakers to focus on developing more fuel-efficient automatic transmission systems that reduce emissions and improve overall vehicle efficiency.”
