Continental’s WinterContact TS 870 P has been awarded the top rating of “exemplary” twice in a single day by leading German motoring magazines, AUTO BILD Allrad and AUTO BILD sportscars, in their 2024 winter tire tests. Both publications praised the tire’s outstanding safety features and high-performance capabilities, highlighting its well-rounded performance on snow-covered, wet, and dry surfaces.
The experts at AUTO BILD Allrad described the WinterContact TS 870 P as a “top-class tire with excellent driving characteristics on snow-covered and wet surfaces, good safety reserves when aquaplaning, short braking distances, and low rolling resistance.” Meanwhile, AUTO BILD sportscars called it “a very convincing winter tire with exemplary qualities on wet and dry surfaces, one of the best in terms of snow handling,” noting its “good, safe aquaplaning responses.”
In a series of test runs conducted on snow-covered, wet, and dry asphalt, the WinterContact TS 870 P scored between 1- and 2, showcasing its balanced performance across all disciplines. It particularly excelled in wet conditions, where its braking distance from 80 km/h (50 mph) was eleven meters shorter than that of the last-place tire—roughly the length of two and a half small cars. This improvement in braking distance offers a crucial safety advantage in the unpredictable winter conditions often seen in Central Europe.
Additionally, the tire’s low rolling resistance garnered the highest score in the test, making it an ideal choice for both electric vehicles, which benefit from increased range, and conventionally powered cars, which see reduced fuel consumption and lower CO2 emissions.
The WinterContact TS 870 P is designed for passenger cars from the midsize class and SUVs, offering precise and safe handling in winter conditions. It is available for wheel rims ranging from 16 to 22 inches, with tire widths between 205 and 325 millimeters and aspect ratios from 70 to 35 percent. Depending on the tire size, it has a speed rating of up to 270 km/h (168 mph).
