Ford Pro is leading the charge in the commercial electrification sector, focusing on how businesses and cities can successfully transition to electric vehicles (EVs) at scale. At the recent MIT EmTech 2024 conference, Wanda Young, Global CMO/CX of Ford Pro, highlighted key insights from the company’s ongoing efforts to integrate EVs into diverse business operations.

Understanding the Commercial Electric Shift
With three years of experience in the electric vehicle market through models like the Mustang Mach-E, E-Transit van, and F-150 Lightning, Ford Pro is applying its learnings to help businesses overcome challenges and realize the benefits of electrification. Wanda Young shared during her “Productivity Electrified” fireside chat that commercial customers—ranging from delivery services to municipal fleets—prioritize total cost of ownership (TCO) and operational needs over brand connection. Yet, only 6% of these customers have adapted their TCO calculations to fully account for the savings and efficiencies electric vehicles can offer.

“Businesses are realizing that lower fuel and maintenance costs can significantly impact their bottom line,” said Young. “For example, the E-Transit™ van offers estimated maintenance savings of 48% compared to its gas-powered counterpart over five years.”

Empowering Data-Driven Solutions
Ford Pro™ E-Telematics plays a crucial role in helping businesses manage their electric fleets efficiently. The software processes over 1 billion data points from Ford commercial vehicles daily, providing insights into fuel and maintenance savings. One customer using E-Telematics saved nearly $6,500 per year, per E-Transit van, demonstrating the tangible economic benefits of switching to EVs.

Navigating Charging Challenges
Transitioning to electric power requires a new approach to vehicle fueling. Ford Pro has learned that a well-planned charging strategy is essential. Young emphasized the importance of educating both business owners and their employees about EV charging. For many companies, charging pilot projects have become the first step toward understanding their needs.

The majority of Ford Pro’s commercial customers—nearly 80%—charge their vehicles privately at home or on-site, using cost-effective AC chargers. The 2024 E-Transit™ van, for instance, can fully charge overnight using the 80A Ford Charge Station Pro, making home charging a practical solution for many businesses.

Building the Right Tools for the Job
Recognizing that businesses have diverse needs, Ford Pro continues to offer a range of powertrains, from hybrid to diesel and fully electric. For instance, wind turbine company Vestas found that the F-150® Lightning® provided a viable solution for their needs, thanks to its spacious design and rugged capabilities. With hundreds of F-150® Lightning® trucks now part of Vestas’ fleet, they’ve been able to deploy across challenging terrains.

Collaborating for Long-Term Success
Ford Pro’s commitment to helping customers maximize the value of electrification is reinforced by collaborations with utility companies and the development of incentive programs, such as the Smart Charging Bundle in Massachusetts. This program offers commercial customers complimentary Ford Pro Chargers when they join the Massachusetts Clean Peak Energy Standard, making electrification more accessible and affordable.

A Future Fueled by Innovation
Wanda Young concluded her remarks at MIT EmTech with a forward-looking perspective, emphasizing that the commercial sector is leading the way in the electric vehicle revolution. “Just as businesses pioneered the adoption of computers, they are now at the forefront of electrification,” Young said. “By listening to our customers and continuously innovating, we’re enabling a more efficient, sustainable future.”

Ford Pro’s initiatives demonstrate the company’s commitment to driving large-scale adoption of electric vehicles and supporting businesses in making a smooth, cost-effective transition to cleaner energy. With these efforts, Ford Pro is poised to remain a leader in commercial electrification, helping build a greener, more efficient tomorrow.
