The BMW Group announced a significant achievement, surpassing 10 million successful Remote Software Upgrades (RSU) installed in vehicles worldwide by the end of September. This technology allows updates to be transmitted directly over the air to the vehicles, with customers then launching the upgrades themselves.
“Today, BMW is able to deliver over-the-air updates to more than nine million vehicles worldwide. And we can update the entire vehicle software in this way,” said Christoph Grote, Senior Vice President of Electronics and Software at BMW Group. “This capability clearly demonstrates our expertise in the field of software-defined vehicles. The fact that ten million Remote Software Upgrades have now been carried out in vehicles underlines how popular this form of innovation is with our customers.”
The first over-the-air upgrade from BMW was introduced five years ago, and this functionality has since expanded to all brands, model series, and drive types within the BMW Group. With the recent introduction of the new Operating System 9, MINI models and the Rolls-Royce Spectre can now also receive updates remotely. “The Remote Software Upgrade facility allows us to keep improving our vehicles without the need for a workshop visit,” Grote added. “This brings greater comfort and safety for our customers and also offers them new features and functional improvements from time to time.”
BMW’s Remote Software Upgrade technology has introduced numerous new features and functional improvements, enhancing comfort, safety, infotainment, driving experience, drive systems, and driver assistance capabilities. A recent customer study highlighted the importance of regular updates in maintaining and improving vehicle performance.
Looking ahead, the BMW Group plans to roll out a series of further upgrades in the coming weeks and months, including model-specific features such as a Silent Mode for Operating System 8.5 and 9, and a new Curve Ahead View in the Head-Up Display, which virtually allows drivers to “see around bends.”
With over 22 million connected vehicles on the road today, the BMW Group continues to lead in the field of connected driving. Features designed specifically for electric vehicles, like “Max Range” for optimizing range and charging-optimized route planning, underscore BMW’s commitment to innovation. The company’s ongoing focus on digital enhancements and customer satisfaction is evident through its pioneering work in transforming vehicles into smart mobility partners.
As digital innovation remains at the forefront of BMW’s strategy, these advancements continue to set industry standards, offering customers a seamless driving experience that evolves with each software update.
