In a surprising turn of events, Enel X Way North America, a subsidiary of the global energy giant Enel Group, has announced the closure of its electric mobility business in the U.S. and Canada. This marks the end of its involvement in the North American EV charging market, a move attributed to high interest rates, shifting market conditions, and unmet expectations for electric vehicle sales growth.

The company has appointed an experienced third-party firm to oversee the closure process, ensuring that customers and partners are informed about the winding down of operations. This includes managing outstanding obligations and handling inquiries from customers, who are expected to receive more details through a forthcoming claims information page.

The decision aligns with the Enel Group’s broader strategic focus, which emphasizes its investment in bundled e-mobility services, targeting countries where it operates as an electricity retailer. In North America, where Enel does not have a retail electricity customer base, its role was limited to selling EV charging hardware and software—a model the company now considers unsustainable amid the current economic environment.

Impact on Customers

As part of the shutdown, Enel X Way has confirmed that its residential charging hardware, such as the popular JuiceBox units, will continue to function without interruption. However, all software services—including those supporting commercial charging stations—will be discontinued. This will severely impact the functionality of commercial chargers that rely on Enel X Way software for operations. Additionally, the company will pull all e-mobility apps from the North American App Store.

Effective immediately, Enel X Way has also ceased providing customer support in the U.S. and Canada, directing users to await further communication via the soon-to-be-launched claims information page.

Global Strategy Unaffected

Despite the closure, North America remains a key region for the broader Enel Group, which continues to invest in utility-scale renewable energy projects and demand response solutions. The company clarified that the decision does not affect Enel X Way’s customers outside the U.S. and Canada, where operations will proceed as usual.
