Honda Motor Co., Ltd. proudly announced the extraordinary achievements of three wheelchair athletes – Catherine Debrunner, Manuela Schär, and Susannah Scaroni – at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. The trio, who competed in various track and marathon events, collectively earned an impressive total of 12 medals, including six golds, further solidifying their dominance in the world of para athletics.
Catherine Debrunner of Switzerland led the charge with a stunning five gold medals in the 400m, 800m, 1500m, 5000m, and marathon events, along with a silver in the 100m. She set new Paralympic records in four of these events, cementing her legacy as the most successful female athlete at the 2024 Games. In her post-competition statement, Debrunner expressed gratitude, saying, “I still can’t believe it! My successes in Paris will go down in the history books… Honda made a decisive contribution to this success.”
Manuela Schär, also from Switzerland, added to her illustrious career with gold in the 800m and silver in the 400m. Schär, a veteran of six Paralympic Games since 2004, took fourth place in the marathon and fifth in the 5000m. Schär announced her retirement from track racing following the competition, stating, “I am happy and grateful to end my career on the track with two medals. Thank you, Honda, for your support over the years.”
Susannah Scaroni of the United States had a breakthrough performance in Paris, winning four medals across her events – silver in the 5000m and bronze in the 800m, 1500m, and marathon. Competing in all four categories for the first time at a single Games, Scaroni emphasized the strength of the women’s T54 field, adding, “The stadium crowds were so loud and motivating… I know that this will impact many people and grow the Paralympic movement.”
