On World EV Day, HERE Technologies, in collaboration with SBD Automotive, has introduced the 2024 Electric Vehicle (EV) Index for India. The Index ranks Indian states and union territories based on metrics critical to EV adoption and infrastructure, providing a comprehensive snapshot of the current EV landscape.

Top Performing Regions:

  1. Chandigarh
  2. Goa
  3. Delhi
  4. Maharashtra
  5. Karnataka

Lowest Performing Regions:

  1. Arunachal Pradesh
  2. Assam
  3. Bihar
  4. Jharkhand
  5. Sikkim

The HERE–SBD EV Index evaluates data from 2023 and 2024 for various EV types, including two- and three-wheelers. Key metrics include the accessibility of public chargers, charging speed, BEV fleet share, and charger availability. Each metric is scored out of 25, contributing to an overall score out of 100.

Chandigarh emerged as the leader with a score of 81.9, attributed to its effective Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) Deployment plan, which includes substantial incentives for EV purchases and charging infrastructure development. The city boasts the highest ratio of chargers to BEVs, with 148 chargers serving just 179 BEVs.

Rajasthan stands out for its BEV fleet penetration, while Uttar Pradesh has the largest BEV fleet in the country. Delhi excels in charger infrastructure access, with a charger approximately every 12.5 km, addressing range anxiety for EV drivers.

However, states like Manipur demonstrate high charger power capacity but lack sufficient infrastructure. Chandigarh’s chargers average 46 kW in power, setting a benchmark for other regions.

Robert Fisher, Electrification and Sustainability Principal at SBD Automotive emphasized the need for coordinated efforts among automakers, energy companies, and governments to develop robust charging infrastructure. “Government incentives and consumer education will be crucial in advancing the transition to electric mobility,” he noted.

Abhijit Sengupta, Senior Director at HERE Technologies, highlighted the Index as a catalyst for informed decision-making in India’s EV sector. “The 2024 HERE–SBD EV Index empowers policymakers and industry leaders to make data-driven decisions that support the acceleration of EV adoption in India.”

The Index also includes second-year findings for the US and Europe, offering valuable insights into the global EV landscape.
