As a leader in the circular economy within the automotive industry, the BMW Group has reached a significant halfway milestone in its Car2Car research project, aimed at revolutionizing vehicle recycling. For over 30 years, BMW’s Recycling and Dismantling Centre (RDC) has been at the forefront of advancing recycling processes, and now, through the Car2Car initiative, the company is pushing boundaries further by focusing on the efficient recycling of steel, aluminum, copper, glass, and plastics.

BMW’s RDC, established in 1994, has transformed into a global center of excellence, developing cutting-edge methods to recycle end-of-life vehicles and making these innovations available worldwide. The Car2Car project, subsidized by the German Federal Government, builds on this expertise, enabling a higher percentage of recyclable materials to be used in the production of new cars.

Key Developments:

Circular Design Approach: BMW integrates lessons from the RDC directly into product design, ensuring new models are built with recyclability in mind from the start.
Efficient Recycling Processes: The RDC employs advanced techniques for dismantling vehicles, focusing on the separation and reuse of valuable materials like copper and precious metals.
Industry Collaboration: Through the Car2Car consortium, BMW collaborates with recycling industries, raw material processors, and scientists to develop semi-automated processes that improve cost efficiency and material recovery.
Rising Focus on Battery Recycling: With the rise of electromobility, the RDC is also pioneering recycling processes for high-voltage batteries, further cementing its role as a leader in sustainable automotive practices.

Diana Schaidnagel, BMW Group Press Officer for Sustainability, emphasized the importance of these advancements in reducing environmental impact and conserving resources. “Today’s scrap is tomorrow’s raw material. By continuously refining our recycling processes, we not only protect the environment but also create economic value,” she stated.

As the automotive industry shifts towards a more sustainable future, the BMW Group’s commitment to circularity and resource conservation sets a benchmark for others to follow.
