Toyota Motor Corporation announced today that its development and production plans for next-generation batteries and all-solid-state batteries have been officially certified by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) under Japan’s “Supply Assurance Plan for Batteries.” This certification highlights the company’s commitment to strengthening Japan’s battery production infrastructure and advancing the electrification of vehicles.
The certification encompasses three key initiatives:
- Production of Next-Generation Batteries (Performance Version) at Prime Planet Energy & Solutions, Inc. (PPES) and Primearth EV Energy Co., Ltd. (PEVE), now set to be renamed “Toyota Battery Co., Ltd.” effective October 1, 2024. Production will commence gradually from 2026, with a targeted production capacity of 9GWh per year.
- R&D and Production of All-Solid-State Batteries, which promise to be a game-changer in battery technology.
This strategic move aligns with METI’s “Initiatives to Ensure a Stable Supply of Batteries,” a policy grounded in the Economic Security Promotion Act. The initiative aims to bolster Japan’s battery production capabilities, with a focus on critical materials, battery cells, and manufacturing equipment.
Toyota’s advancement in battery development is expected to enhance the marketability of electrified vehicles and drive progress toward achieving carbon neutrality through a multi-pathway approach. The company remains at the forefront of Japan’s efforts to maintain leadership in the global battery industry, which is crucial for the future of sustainable mobility.
