Toyota and BMW Strengthen Alliance to Accelerate Hydrogen Society and Carbon Neutrality

In a significant step towards advancing a hydrogen society, Toyota Motor Corporation and BMW Group have reinforced their decade-long collaboration, aiming to expand the development and deployment of hydrogen fuel cell technology. The two automotive giants announced their joint efforts to create a third-generation fuel cell system and establish sustainable hydrogen infrastructure, marking a major milestone in the global push for carbon neutrality.

This strengthened partnership follows the companies’ 2011 agreement to collaborate on environmental technologies. By sharing a common vision for a hydrogen-powered future, Toyota and BMW plan to introduce a broader range of fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs), beginning with BMW’s first mass-produced FCEV set for launch in 2028.

Toyota President Koji Sato emphasized the importance of “technology openness” and a “multi-pathway” approach to carbon neutrality, highlighting the deepened collaboration as a crucial step toward realizing a hydrogen society. BMW Chairman Oliver Zipse hailed the partnership as a transformative moment in automotive history, underscoring the role of fuel cell technology in shaping the future of mobility.
