As summer beckons, BMW enthusiasts are once again drawn southward. The launch of the new BMW 4 Series Convertible and the BMW Z4, with fresh design accents and advanced features, promises a thrilling journey through the scenic landscapes of southern Europe. The recent tour, traversing three countries—from the Bavarian Alps, through Austria’s Tyrol, to the Dolomites in Italy—demonstrated the exhilarating driving experience offered by BMW’s M automobiles, all equipped with in-line six-cylinder engines.

Journey Begins in Bavaria: A Dynamic Start

The adventure commenced at Lake Tegernsee, with gusty winds and low-hanging clouds setting a dramatic tone. The convoy, featuring the BMW M440i xDrive Convertible, M440i xDrive Coupé, and the BMW Z4 M40i Pure Impulse Edition, soon crossed into Austria. Despite the grey skies, the engines’ power and precision quickly dispelled any sense of gloom.

The 8-speed Steptronic sports transmission and BMW’s xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive in the M440i models ensured a smooth ride along the coastal road of Lake Achensee. The engines, boasting up to 374 hp, demonstrated BMW’s commitment to blending power with efficiency. Meanwhile, the Z4 Roadster, now with a manual transmission, offered a unique driving experience that emphasized driver control and engagement.

Tyrolean Break: Design and Innovation Showcase

In Innsbruck, the convoy took a brief pause, offering a closer look at the new design features. The Convertible and Coupé models now sport striking headlights and Laserlight rear lights, while the Roadster features axle-specific wheel dimensions for enhanced cornering behavior. The sleek, new color options—including the exclusive Frozen Deep Green metallic—added to the allure.

Through the Alps: Performance Meets Panoramic Views

The journey continued over the historic Brenner Pass, leading into Italy. The winding roads provided the perfect testing ground for BMW’s advanced driving dynamics. The M440i xDrive models tackled the serpentine bends with ease, while the Z4 M40i’s purist design and advanced suspension technology delivered an unfiltered performance experience.

As the convoy descended into Merano, the Mediterranean flair of northern Italy offered a sharp contrast to the alpine roads, marking the end of a journey that perfectly encapsulated BMW’s promise of ultimate driving pleasure.

With the soft tops open and the sun shining, the only decision left for drivers was whether to head back north or continue their journey southward.
