Amara Raja Advanced Cell Technologies Private Limited (ARACT), a subsidiary of Amara Raja Energy & Mobility Limited (ARE&M), has announced a new partnership with Piaggio Vehicles Private Limited, a wholly-owned Indian subsidiary of the Italian automotive giant Piaggio Group. The two companies have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to advance the development and supply of Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) Lithium-Ion (Li-ion) cells and chargers for Piaggio’s electric vehicles (EVs).
Under this agreement, Amara Raja will work with Piaggio India to produce LFP cells and battery packs for upcoming EV models, which will be manufactured locally at Amara Raja’s Gigafactory in Divitipally, Telangana. This collaboration builds on their previous joint efforts, during which Amara Raja supplied 50,000 NMC Li-ion battery packs and EV chargers to Piaggio India, accumulating over 120 crore kilometers of operation.
This new MoU follows Amara Raja’s recent deal with Gotion-InoBat-Batteries (GIB) to adapt global LFP technology for Indian conditions and a separate agreement with Jiangsu Highstar Battery Manufacturing Co. for NMC technology. Amara Raja is committed to expanding its presence in the e-mobility and energy storage markets, with plans to invest Rs 9,500 crores in a 16GWh capacity gigafactory and establish a cutting-edge research and innovation center, ‘ePositive Energy Labs,’ in Hyderabad.
Piaggio India, known for its leadership in the electric three-wheeler market, has also introduced a pioneering battery subscription model, making EVs more accessible to customers.
Vikramaditya Gourineni, Executive Director of Amara Raja Energy & Mobility Ltd, expressed enthusiasm about the new collaboration, noting the long-standing partnership with Piaggio India and the company’s progress in developing advanced manufacturing facilities. “We are confident that this new agreement will enhance Piaggio’s product offerings and drive innovation in the Indian EV market,” he said.
Diego Graffi, Chairman & Managing Director of Piaggio Vehicles Pvt. Ltd, welcomed the strengthened partnership, highlighting Piaggio’s commitment to innovation and customer empowerment. “Together with Amara Raja, we are optimistic about advancing our EV journey and supporting India’s transition to electric mobility,” Graffi stated.
