Electric two-wheeler manufacturer Ather Energy announced its new partnership with Amara Raja Advanced Cell Technologies for the development and supply of battery cells. The agreement, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), involves Amara Raja Advanced Cell Technologies (ARACT), a subsidiary of Amara Raja Energy & Mobility (ARE&M), collaborating with Ather Energy.
As part of the MoU, Amara Raja will work with Ather to create and supply advanced lithium-ion cells, including Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC) and Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) types, among other advanced chemistries.
Ather Energy Co-founder and CEO Tarun Mehta highlighted that the company has a history of designing and manufacturing products locally in India, with most components sourced domestically except for cells.
He stated, “We are now advancing by supporting homegrown cell technology. This move will help us optimize costs and acquire lithium-ion cells specifically tailored to Ather’s needs, which will further boost our ability to innovate and scale effectively.”
Mehta emphasized the goal of fostering growth in the domestic industry to meet current and future energy demands in India.
Vikramaditya Gourineni, Executive Director at Amara Raja Energy & Mobility, noted that the company has made significant strides in developing top-notch facilities to manufacture cells and battery packs suited for Indian conditions. He expressed that the collaboration with Ather will focus on creating solutions relevant to India’s push for indigenous electric vehicle technology.
