Hyundai Motor Group’s Robotics LAB has achieved significant recognition at the 2024 Red Dot Design Award, securing three prestigious accolades, including two “Best of Best” prizes. The Red Dot Awards, one of the world’s leading design competitions, honored the Robotics LAB in the Robotics category for their innovative contributions.
Pioneering Robotics and Design Excellence
Dong Jin Hyun, Vice President and Head of Robotics LAB at Hyundai Motor and Kia, expressed the Group’s commitment to integrating robotics into everyday life: “These awards are the result of Hyundai Motor Group’s continuous efforts to ensure that customers and innovative robotics technologies can meet naturally. We will continue to make efforts as a friendly guide to the robot intelligence society, alongside devotion to take the lead in turning imagination into reality.”
Best of Best Winner: Safety Inspection Robot
One of the standout winners was the Group’s innovative Safety Inspection Robot, which operates at the Hyundai Motor Group Innovation Center Singapore (HMGICS). This robot utilizes artificial intelligence to inspect machinery within the smart urban mobility hub, identifying abnormalities with high precision. Designed with optimized packaging and a sculpted cover, it prevents sensor blind spots and enhances productivity. The robot’s exterior emphasizes its technological prowess while blending seamlessly into its environment.
The robot features a telescopic extension that elevates its camera, maximizing its field of view and improving detection capabilities. Equipped with four Plug and Drive (PnD) modules, it navigates around obstacles, inspecting gauges, valves, and components in hard-to-reach places. This capability corrects human error and reports missed contaminants or spillages.
Best of Best Winner: MobED Delivery Robot
The Group’s MobED Delivery robot, another “Best of Best” winner, is a compact and minimalistic mobility platform. Its DnL (Drive and Lift) module integrates driving, steering, and braking into a single eccentric wheel mechanism, allowing dynamic adjustment of body inclination and height for seamless movement. This design ensures safe delivery of goods and reduces inconvenience for pedestrians.
MobED Delivery adapts to various terrains and elevations, extending its load tray towards the ground for smooth item delivery via a conveyor belt. The robot’s design allows it to function in diverse environments, such as offices and apartments, enhancing convenience by eliminating the need for personal item reception.
Red Dot Winner: DAL-e Delivery Robot
The Robotics LAB’s DAL-e Delivery robot also received a Red Dot Winner award. This robot, designed for food, beverage, and parcel delivery in complex spaces like offices and shopping malls, features a PnD module for efficient operation. Its sophisticated design includes a top display and signature exterior LED lighting to indicate its status. The robot’s load cabin securely stores items during transit and features double doors that open automatically, along with a powered tray for smooth delivery.
The DAL-e Delivery robot navigates autonomously, using a suite of cameras and sensors, ensuring reliable and efficient delivery services.
Hyundai Motor Group’s achievements at the 2024 Red Dot Design Award underscore their leadership in innovative robotics and design excellence. These accolades highlight the Group’s dedication to integrating advanced technologies into practical applications, paving the way for a future where robotics and humans coexist seamlessly.
