In a groundbreaking initiative, Hyundai Motor Group has donated an innovative Hydrogen Fuel Cell Support Bus to the Korean National Fire Agency. This state-of-the-art vehicle, designed to aid firefighters in recovery from extreme conditions, is a testament to Hyundai’s commitment to enhancing the safety and well-being of first responders.
A Tailored Solution for Firefighters
The Hydrogen Fuel Cell Support Bus, based on the Hyundai Universe fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV), was developed with significant input from Korean firefighters and the Fire Department on Korea’s Jeju Island. This collaboration ensures that the vehicle meets the specific needs of those who battle blazes daily. The bus was officially handed over to the Fire Department on Jeju Island, known for its dedication to clean energy and sustainable practices.
Highlighting the Importance of Recovery
In conjunction with the donation, Hyundai released a campaign video titled ‘Got Your Back – Hydrogen Fuel Cell Support Bus for Firefighters’ Recovery in the Line of Duty.’ Narrated by Korean-American firefighter Peter Lee, the film emphasizes the perils firefighters face and the critical need for recovery solutions. Veteran firefighters in the video underscore the importance of taking breaks during intense firefighting operations, promoting the idea that protecting one’s health is as crucial as saving others.
Features of the Support Bus
The Hydrogen Fuel Cell Support Bus is equipped with several features to optimize the recovery environment for firefighters:
- U-shaped Meeting Space: Sofas arranged to foster a communal atmosphere and encourage interaction.
- Premium Reclining Seats: Designed for maximum comfort and rest.
- Compact Cooking Area: Allows easy access to food and beverages.
- External Air Tent: Powered by the bus, providing additional space.
- High-Pressure Air Gun: Used to remove contaminants from rescue equipment.
- High-Pressure Water Gun: For cleaning firefighter apparatus.
- Storage Area: Specifically for fire-resistant clothing, preventing secondary contamination.
The vehicle operates silently and without vibration, using its hydrogen fuel cell to emit only pure water, ensuring a restful environment. It also supports air-conditioning, heating, and other essential functions without producing carbon dioxide emissions.
Advancing Towards a Hydrogen Society
The bus is fueled by green hydrogen produced at the Green Hydrogen Production Complex on Jeju Island. This initiative is part of Hyundai’s broader ambition to establish a hydrogen-based ecosystem and accelerate the development of a hydrogen society. Hyundai’s XCIENT Fuel Cell heavy-duty trucks, already deployed in ten countries, have collectively driven over 10 million kilometers in Switzerland alone, showcasing the reliability and global leadership of Hyundai in hydrogen technology.
Hyundai’s commitment to hydrogen is further highlighted by the appointment of Jaehoon Chang, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor Company, as Co-Chair of the Hydrogen Council, reinforcing the Group’s leadership in the sector.
The donation of the Hydrogen Fuel Cell Support Bus marks a significant milestone in Hyundai Motor Group’s efforts to support firefighters and promote sustainable energy solutions. This innovative vehicle not only aids in the recovery of firefighters but also exemplifies the potential of hydrogen technology in enhancing human safety and environmental sustainability.
