Convergence Energy Services Limited (CESL), in collaboration with EY and supported by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) under India’s GEF 7: India e-mobility Program, has launched a pivotal study titled “Electrifying Transport in Varanasi & EVCI Network Planning 2025-35.” The study aims to chart a comprehensive roadmap for large-scale electric vehicle (EV) adoption in the holy city of Varanasi by 2035.

The launch event, graced by Ashok Tiwari, Hon’ Mayor of Varanasi, and Shri Akshat Verma, Municipal Commissioner of Varanasi, saw senior officials deliberating on various strategies to bolster the EV ecosystem in the city. Notable attendees included Mozaharul Alam, Regional Coordinator for Climate Change, Mr. Samrat Ray, Senior Energy Specialist at ADB, and Shri Somesh Kumar, Power & Utility Partner at EY, who provided valuable insights on promoting clean mobility.

Ashok Tiwari expressed his optimism about the initiative, stating, “This is a positive step towards reducing emissions and improving air quality in Varanasi. The study will help identify the best ways to electrify transport in the city and develop a plan for a network of electric vehicle charging stations, making it easier for people to switch to electric vehicles and reduce pollution.”

The report, titled “Varanasi City-wide EV Demand Planning and EVCI Network Plan 2025-35,” outlines a promising future for EVs in Varanasi:

  • E-Two Wheelers: Electric two-wheelers are expected to lead the charge with a projected penetration rate of 48-50% by 2035, translating to sales of 35,000 to 38,000 units.
  • E-Rickshaws: Already prevalent in the city, e-rickshaws are anticipated to maintain their dominance, achieving a 100% market share by 2035, resulting in an additional 18,000 to 20,000 e-rickshaws.
  • E-Three Wheelers: E-three wheelers are poised for significant growth, with a projected penetration rate of 90-100% by 2035, equating to 8,000 to 9,000 additional units.
  • E-Four Wheelers: While the adoption of electric four-wheelers is expected to be slower, the report forecasts a penetration rate of 20-25% by 2035, translating to sales of 4,000 to 5,000 units.

The anticipated surge in EVs necessitates a robust Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure (EVCI) network. The report emphasizes the need for strategically placed charging stations to alleviate “range anxiety” and encourage wider EV adoption.

Shri Akshat Verma highlighted the challenges of scaling up power generation to meet the increased demand for EVs, but expressed confidence in the combined efforts of government support, strategic planning, and public awareness campaigns to pave the way for a cleaner and more sustainable Varanasi.

“This initiative by Varanasi serves as a model for other Indian cities looking to embrace a greener transportation future,” said Mr. Samrat Ray of ADB.

The initiative represents a significant step towards reducing emissions, improving air quality, and promoting sustainable transportation in Varanasi. With the collaborative efforts of CESL, EY, ADB, and local authorities, Varanasi is poised to become a leader in the adoption of electric vehicles, setting a benchmark for other cities to follow.
