Volkswagen Group has reported stable delivery figures for the first half of 2024, matching the previous year’s performance despite a challenging market environment. The company delivered a total of 4.35 million vehicles worldwide, just slightly below the 4.37 million vehicles delivered in the same period in 2023.

The group’s performance was buoyed by significant growth in North America, where deliveries increased by 8%, and in South America, which saw a 15% rise. Western Europe also contributed positively with a 2% increase in deliveries. However, these gains were almost offset by declines in other regions, particularly in China, where deliveries fell by 7.4% due to intense competition.

In the electric vehicle segment, Volkswagen Group’s global deliveries of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in the first half of 2024 were slightly lower at 317,200 units compared to 321,600 units in the same period last year. Despite this, the BEV share rose to 8.1% in the second quarter of 2024, up from 7.7% in Q2 2023. Notably, BEV deliveries in China surged by 45%, while Europe and the USA experienced declines of 15%.

Plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV) deliveries also showed a positive trend, increasing by 17% to 136,000 units in the first half of 2024. The company anticipates additional momentum in this segment with the launch of new second-generation models offering extended electric ranges.

Hildegard Wortmann, Member of the Group’s Extended Executive Committee for Sales, stated, “In the first half of the year, the Volkswagen Group was able to match the previous year’s delivery level in a challenging market environment. The basis for this is our continued strong position in Western Europe. In North America and South America, we grew significantly and were able to expand our market share. As announced, we have deliberately prioritized sustainable value creation over higher volumes in the highly competitive environment in China in order to achieve our long-term strategic goals. For the full year 2024, we continue to expect a slight increase in global deliveries compared to the previous year due to the launch and ramp-up of numerous important models in the second half of the year.”

Volkswagen Group’s best-selling all-electric models included the Volkswagen ID.4/ID.5 with 86,800 units, the Volkswagen ID.3 with 66,200 units, and the Audi Q4 e-tron (including Sportback) with 52,100 units.

Overall, Volkswagen Group’s resilience in a fluctuating global market underscores its strategic focus on sustainable growth and its commitment to expanding its electric vehicle offerings to meet increasing consumer demand.
