Hyundai Motor Group and University of Oxford Team Up to Set Up Foresight Centre to Shape Future Strategy

Hyundai Motor Group and the University of Oxford launched the Oxford-Hyundai Motor Group Foresight Centre at Saïd Business School on July 8. This center aims to enhance Hyundai’s long-term strategic planning by identifying future geopolitical risks and trends. It will foster interdisciplinary research and collaboration among government agencies, academia, and industry experts to advance societal progress. The University of Oxford, known for its Oxford Scenario Planning Approach (OSPA), brings expertise in reshaping industry perspectives and developing long-term corporate strategies.

Specialized programs like the Oxford Scenarios Programme and Oxford Futures Forum will disseminate insights across Hyundai Motor Group, promoting strategic alignment and innovative leadership. The Foresight Centre will also collaborate with the Group’s open innovation network in the US, China, India, Germany, and Singapore, enhancing the Group’s ecosystems. Directed by Professor Rafael Ramirez and co-directed by Associate Professor Trudi Lang, the Centre will leverage their extensive expertise in future scenario planning and strategic foresight to guide the Group’s long-term vision.

Representatives from Hyundai Motor Group included Gyun Kim, Executive Vice President of the HMG Business Intelligence Institute, and Heung-Soo Kim, Executive Vice President of the Global Strategy Office. From the University of Oxford, attendees included Professor Soumitra Dutta, Dean of Saïd Business School, Professor Jonathan Reynolds, Deputy Dean of Saïd Business School, Professor Rafael Ramirez, Director of the Oxford Scenarios Programme, Professor Trudi Lang, Senior Fellow in Management Practice, along with other school officials.

Gyun Kim,Executive Vice President and Head of Hyundai Motor Group Business Intelligence Institute, said, “The automotive industry is undergoing a paradigm shift and significant changes in business environments, leading to unprecedented uncertainty. In such times, it is crucial for companies to move away from an experience-based approach and adopt a long-term perspective to identify large-scale future trends. We expect that the Foresight Centre will play a significant role in cultivating a multifaceted and comprehensive perspective on the future within organizations, known as ‘future literacy’.”
