Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. released its production, sales, and export figures for May 2024, revealing a nuanced performance across different markets and vehicle categories.
Production Overview
In May 2024, Nissan’s global production reached 274,962 vehicles, marking a slight increase of 0.1% compared to the previous year. This growth was driven by production outside Japan, which rose by 2.1% to 225,789 vehicles. Key contributors to this increase included Mexico and China, which saw significant year-on-year production growth of 7.5% and 18.0%, respectively.
However, production in Japan faced a downturn, declining by 7.9% to 49,173 vehicles. Passenger vehicle production in Japan decreased by 5.0%, while commercial vehicle production dropped sharply by 30.4%.
Sales Performance
Global sales for May 2024 totaled 272,405 vehicles, a decrease of 0.8% from the same period last year. Despite this overall decline, some regions and segments showed positive trends. Sales in North America remained stable, with a notable 0.4% increase in the United States and a 3.9% rise in Mexico. Canada, however, experienced an 11.0% drop in sales.
In Japan, total vehicle sales, including minivehicles, decreased by 3.4% to 31,579 units. Sales of registered vehicles in Japan fell by 11.2%, while minivehicle sales saw a robust increase of 9.9%.
Export Highlights
Exports from Japan exhibited a strong performance, increasing by 11.4% year-on-year to 30,878 vehicles. This growth was led by a 41.7% surge in exports to North America and a 38.8% rise in exports to Europe. Conversely, exports to other regions declined by 38.1%.
Year-to-Date Figures
For the January to May 2024 period, Nissan’s global production totaled 1,367,701 vehicles, a slight decline of 1.9% compared to the same period in 2023. Sales for the same period reached 1,436,052 vehicles, reflecting a 4.0% increase year-on-year. Exports from Japan during this period rose by 3.2% to 163,180 vehicles.
