In a thrilling final series, FC Bayern Munich Basketball emerged victorious against Alba Berlin with a score of 88:82, securing their sixth German Basketball Championship title. This victory, celebrated in the capital last Friday, marks a historic double for the team, who also clinched the BBL Pokal earlier in February at their home venue, BMW Park.
This remarkable achievement comes in the first year of collaboration with their mobility partner, BMW München. Under the guidance of coach Pablo Laso, the team, including world champions Andreas Obst, Isaac Bonga, and Niels Giffey, delivered spectacular performances throughout the season, culminating in a dominant display in the finals.
“Dunks for Tomorrow” Initiative Raises €141,000 for SOS-Kinderdorf
A highlight of the season was the “Dunks for Tomorrow” initiative, launched by BMW München and FC Bayern Munich Basketball. For every dunk made by the team at home games, BMW pledged to donate €1,000 to SOS-Kinderdorf e.V., a charity supporting children and young people through educational projects. The initiative amassed an impressive total of 141 dunks, resulting in a generous donation of €141,000.
In a ceremonial handover, Bernd Döpke, Head of BMW München, FCBB ambassador Steffen Hamann, and Anna Pönisch, Head of Marketing at SOS-Kinderdorf e.V., met at the BMW München branch. Döpke presented a basketball hoop and two basketballs symbolizing the donation, expressing pride in the initiative’s success. “We are thrilled by the highly successful season for FC Bayern Munich Basketball and warmly congratulate the team on winning the German Championship and the BBL Pokal. The fact that our joint initiative also ends with such success, enabling many children and young people to have better future opportunities, makes us particularly proud,” said Döpke.
Special Highlights and Star Contributions
Throughout the season, star center Serge Ibaka led the team with 37 dunks, the highest of any player, significantly contributing to the initiative’s success. A notable season highlight was the EuroLeague match between FC Bayern Munich Basketball and Real Madrid, where BMW extended their donation for dunks made by both teams, adding €7,000 to the initiative.
Impact on SOS-Kinderdorf
The funds raised will support various educational projects for children from disadvantaged families, aiding their development and providing better future opportunities. “We are incredibly pleased with the great support we have received thanks to the ‘Dunks for Tomorrow’ campaign,” said Marketing Director Pönisch from SOS-Kinderdorf e.V. “With BMW’s contribution, we can better enable the healthy upbringing and sustainable education of the children and young people entrusted to us.”
Looking Ahead
For the FC Bayern Munich basketball players, the initiative provided extra motivation throughout their championship-winning season. “€141,000 as a donation amount is an insane sum as proceeds from this joint initiative and at the same time a great conclusion to a successful season. FC Bayern Basketball would like to thank BMW for this generous social commitment,” said Hamann.
As the team celebrates their triumph over Alba Berlin and the successful conclusion of the season, BMW München extends heartfelt congratulations and looks forward to welcoming fans back to BMW Park for another exciting season.
