In a bid to close rural transportation gaps, Ionia Dial-A-Ride has embraced electric vehicles, adding two Ford E-Transit vans to its fleet. This initiative, supported by a grant from Consumers Energy’s PowerMIFleet program, marks a significant step in providing eco-friendly and accessible transportation to the residents of Ionia, a city with a population of approximately 13,000.

Ionia Dial-A-Ride, a vital service for the community, offers low-fare, curb-to-curb rides on demand, serving the city and surrounding townships. Director Heidi Wenzel highlighted the importance of the service, especially for non-emergency medical trips, work commutes, grocery runs, and social activities. “Dial-A-Ride is a living necessity for so many community members,” Wenzel stated.

The addition of the Ford E-Transit™ vans, which are ADA accessible, not only meets growing demand but also addresses hiring challenges. Unlike the larger commercial buses that require a commercial driver’s license (CDL) with a passenger endorsement, operating the E-Transit vans only necessitates a chauffeur’s license, making it easier to find qualified drivers.

The drivers and passengers have quickly adapted to the new electric vehicles, enjoying quieter and smoother rides. Charging the E-Transit vans is efficiently managed with Ford Pro Charging Software, allowing for depot charging and scheduling during off-peak hours.

Wenzel is optimistic about the future, aiming for a no-emission fleet. “We’re working toward a no-emission fleet,” she said. Ford Pro continues to support Ionia Dial-A-Ride’s mission, providing accessible and sustainable transportation solutions.
