The prestigious Preis der Nationalgalerie 2024 was awarded to Pan Daijing, Dan Lie, Hanne Lippard, and James Richards at Hamburger Bahnhof – Nationalgalerie der Gegenwart. Their innovative artistic positions will be showcased in a group exhibition at Hamburger Bahnhof, opening on June 7 with three admission-free open days. These works will subsequently join the Nationalgalerie’s collection.

The BMW Group Cultural Engagement, the main partner since 2006, supported the event. Ilka Horstmeier, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, Human Resources and Real Estate, attended the festive award ceremony where the newly designed trophies by BMW Group Designworks were presented.

Celebrating Innovative Art

The awarded artists have each conceived unique installations that engage dynamically with the exhibition space through sound, light, moving images, and biological matter. James Richards’ installation blends collage, film, and sculpture, while Hanne Lippard’s work features immersive soundscapes using her voice. Pan Daijing presents a cinematic and musical Gesamtkunstwerk, and Dan Lie creates a sensory artistic ecosystem.

“The Preis der Nationalgalerie stands for innovation, creativity, and cultural diversity—values deeply rooted in the BMW Group. We are proud to support this inspiring initiative and the art scene in Germany,” said Ilka Horstmeier.

Unique Trophies by BMW Group Designworks

For the first time, the trophies were designed by BMW Group Designworks. Inspired by the architecture of the Nationalgalerie, the trophies feature four vertical steel plates set in a plinth, symbolizing the connection between historical and contemporary structures. Each trophy’s unique design reflects the interplay between the institutions involved.

Supporting Artistic Creation

Sam Bardaouil and Till Fellrath, Directors of Hamburger Bahnhof – Nationalgalerie der Gegenwart, emphasized the prize’s focus on supporting artistic creation through its new collective award format. “With four diverse positions, the twelfth edition of the Preis der Nationalgalerie once again showcases pioneering artistic creations. We extend our gratitude to BMW and the Freunde der Nationalgalerie for their generous support,” they stated.
