Ford Motor Company has announced significant upgrades to the 2024 F-150 PowerBoost hybrid, showcasing improved powertrain smoothness compared to previous models. This advancement stems from over 300 software enhancements, meticulous calibration, and extensive development testing, resulting in a refined hybrid system.

Traditionally, internal combustion engine vehicles use a flywheel starter to initiate the engine. The first-generation PowerBoost system included an additional starter integrated into the accessory belt drive. However, Ford’s engineering team has now eliminated the belt starter, thanks to innovative software enhancements that allow the hybrid motor to take on this role. This enables the drive motor to spin up the engine through the transmission, leading to a smoother integration of power between the electric hybrid motor and the gasoline engine, providing a more seamless driving experience.

These improvements are the culmination of three years of development and extensive testing on the 2021 F-150 PowerBoost. The removal of the belt starter has not only simplified the powertrain but also streamlined the supply chain, reduced complexity at the assembly facility, and lowered production costs.
