The 2024 Super GT series roared into action at Suzuka Circuit, with Nissan Z Nismo GT500 cars securing valuable points despite facing challenges. Following a dominant 1-2 finish at Fuji International Speedway, the Nissan/NISMO teams aimed for a repeat victory at the prestigious Suzuka track.

However, success weights imposed due to previous strong performances hampered the Z cars’ pace. The #3 Niterra Motul Z, #12 Marelli Impul Z, and #23 Motul Autech Z all carried the extra weight, making the 3-hour race an uphill battle.

Tight Race for Top Positions

Race conditions started dry despite a morning threat of rain. The #3 Z (Takaboshi/Miyake), #12 Z (Hiramine/Baguette), #23 Z (Quintarelli/Chiyo), and #24 Z (Matsuda/Natori) started in the midfield, battling for position throughout the race.

After the first round of pit stops, the #12 Z emerged in 6th place, followed by the #24 Z and #3 Z. The #23 Z dropped back to 10th after a drive-through penalty due to contact with another car.

Kazuki Hiramine took the wheel of the #12 Z for the second stint and displayed impressive pace. He overtook two competitors, bringing the car into 4th position. However, the #23 Z continued to struggle with a 10th place finish due to the penalty.

Light rain in the closing stages added another layer of complexity. The #12 Z delayed its second pit stop and benefitted from this strategy, ultimately finishing in 4th place with a strong push for a podium finish.

Resilience Pays Off for Other Z Cars

Despite carrying success weights, the #3 Z showed tenacity to finish in 8th place. The #24 Z and #23 Z managed to stay within the top 10, securing valuable championship points for Nissan.

Looking Ahead to Next Round

The Nissan/NISMO teams are already gearing up for the next challenge at Fuji International Speedway in early August. They remain confident in the Z Nismo GT500’s potential and aim to capture their second win of the season.
