Ford Performance is set to make a powerful return to the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, also known as “America’s Mountain,” with its latest electric innovation—the F-150 Lightning SuperTruck. This formidable vehicle will compete in the 102nd edition of the hill climb, sponsored by Gran Turismo, scheduled for late June.
The F-150 Lightning SuperTruck, an enhanced version of Ford’s popular electric pickup, is being specially modified by the Ford Performance team to tackle the challenging 12.5-mile course. The modifications focus on boosting the truck’s aerodynamics and power output, making it a perfect candidate for testing the limits of electric powertrains in extreme conditions. This endeavor aims to gather valuable data to further Ford’s electric vehicle (EV) powertrain research and development.
Participating in this prestigious event provides Ford with a unique opportunity to test and refine critical components such as motors, inverters, and battery packs, alongside software calibration and battery cell chemistry. The high-altitude, winding roads of Pikes Peak present an ideal environment to push these systems to their limits and enhance the performance of future production vehicles.
Ford released a teaser video today, showcasing the SuperTruck ahead of its qualifying runs in Colorado Springs, which will take place from June 18 to June 20. The main event, the Hill Climb, is set for June 23. Renowned driver Romain Dumas will pilot the SuperTruck, competing as vehicle No. 150.
This marks Ford’s second consecutive year competing with an electric test vehicle at Pikes Peak. Last year, Ford’s 1,400-horsepower Electric SuperVan 4.2, derived from the E-Transit Custom Van, set a class record and secured a victory.
Beyond Pikes Peak, Ford Performance continues to expand its electric vehicle expertise with other projects. The Mustang Super Cobra Jet 1800 and Mustang Mach-E 1400 are helping Ford advance its understanding of battery cell chemistry, heat management, and cooling systems. Additionally, Ford is gaining insights into hybrid powertrains through its strategic partnership with Oracle Red Bull Racing in preparation for the company’s return to Formula 1 in 2026.
The participation of the F-150 Lightning SuperTruck in the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb underscores Ford’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of EV technology and performance, setting the stage for the next generation of electric vehicles.
