In a thrilling start to the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship season at Long Beach, BMW M Team RLL showcased both resilience and disappointment as they navigated the unforgiving streets of California. Despite a promising qualifying performance, the team faced challenges during the 100-minute sprint race, ultimately missing out on the coveted podium finish.
Nick Yelloly and Connor De Phillippi ignited hopes for BMW M Team RLL as they launched from second position in the #25 BMW M Hybrid V8. However, the race took an unexpected turn during a yellow flag period, disrupting their momentum and relegating them down the order. Battling with a damaged front on the demanding street circuit, their aspirations for a podium were thwarted, and they concluded the race in ninth place in the GTP class.
Meanwhile, their teammates Philipp Eng and Jesse Krohn in the #24 BMW M Hybrid V8 faced their own set of challenges. Despite a valiant effort, they struggled to make significant progress on the tight circuit, ultimately securing a sixth-place finish. Though not the result they had hoped for, the team managed to collect vital points towards their championship campaign.
However, amidst the trials faced by BMW M Team RLL, there was cause for celebration with Turner Motorsport’s #96 BMW M4 GT3. Piloted by Robby Foley and Patrick Gallagher, the car surged from seventh on the grid to claim a remarkable second-place finish in the GTD category, showcasing the prowess of the BMW M4 GT3 on the challenging Long Beach circuit.
Reflecting on the race, Andreas Roos, Head of BMW M Motorsport, acknowledged the disappointment of missing out on a podium but expressed confidence in the competitiveness of the BMW M Hybrid V8. Looking ahead to future races, Roos emphasized the team’s commitment to striving for top results and praised Turner Motorsport for their podium success.
Despite the setbacks, drivers Jesse Krohn and Nick Yelloly remained undeterred, focusing on the next challenge at Laguna Seca and expressing determination to build on the strengths of their BMW M Hybrid V8. With their eyes set firmly on redemption, BMW M Team RLL is poised to bounce back stronger in the battles that lie ahead.
