The Delhi Cabinet has approved an extension of the Electric Vehicle (EV) policy until June of this year, ensuring the continuation of current incentives and subsidies.
According to a statement from the Delhi government, vehicles purchased from January 1 onwards will be eligible for the benefits provided under this extension.
The policy will be operational until either June 30 or the announcement of Delhi EV Policy 2.0, whichever occurs earlier. During a Cabinet meeting, the choice to prolong the policy was finalized, while inputs from diverse stakeholders are under review for potential integration into the forthcoming Delhi EV Policy 2.0.
Delhi Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot emphasized the commitment of the government to promote a sustainable and eco-friendly transport ecosystem in the capital under the leadership of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.
The original Delhi Electric Vehicle Policy, launched on August 7, 2020, with an initial term of three years, was subsequently prolonged until December 31, 2023.
Presently, the government is actively crafting EV Policy 2.0, following consultations conducted on May 24, 2023, to gather input from essential stakeholders and the wider public.
Since its introduction, more than 180,000 electric vehicles (EVs) have been registered, predominantly consisting of two-wheelers and three-wheelers.
The average annual EV penetration has increased from three per cent in 2020 to 12 per cent by December 2023, reaching a peak of 16 per cent in December 2023, the highest monthly EV penetration among all states in India.
According to the policy, the Kejriwal administration has allocated financial incentives exceeding Rs 179 crore across diverse electric vehicle sectors, comprising Rs 64 crore for two-wheelers and over Rs 100 crore for three-wheelers.
