In a strategic move to bolster its capabilities in mass-producing automotive batteries, Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) has announced an agreement with Panasonic Holdings Corporation (Panasonic HD) to acquire Primearth EV Energy Co., Ltd. (PEVE) as a wholly owned subsidiary. The acquisition, scheduled to be completed by late March, underscores Toyota’s commitment to advancing its electric vehicle (EV) offerings and meeting the growing demand for sustainable mobility solutions.

Currently, among Toyota-affiliated companies, PEVE, Toyota Industries Corporation, and Prime Planet Energy & Solutions, Inc. (a joint venture owned by Toyota and Panasonic HD) are engaged in the mass production of batteries for hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). Prime Planet Energy & Solutions, Inc. also manufactures batteries for battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). Toyota affirms its commitment to continuing collaboration with these entities in battery mass production and development.

With the acquisition of PEVE, Toyota aims to expand its battery production capabilities to include BEVs and PHEVs. This strategic shift will enable Toyota to respond flexibly to the increasing demand for electric vehicle batteries while enhancing its mass-production competitiveness. The move aligns with Toyota’s broader strategy to enhance the appeal of its electric vehicle lineup and contribute to achieving carbon neutrality through a multi-pathway approach.
